What types of rocks formed Table Mountain?
Type of rocks? The different sections that make up Table Mountain:
The Malmesbury group The Malmesbury group is formed out of sandstone and slate The pennisula group The pennisula group is formed out of granite from 630 million years ago Table Mountain group Formed out of sandstone deposited via stream chanels and travel flatts through deltas about 450 million years ago Pennisula formation Formed out of quartz sandstone, and is mainly found on the mountain cliffs, and is deposited through migrating sandbars. Pakhuis formation The Pakhuis section of Table Mountain is found on the highest points of the mountain, deposited around the time when Godwana was a continent |
What they are made ofQuartz Sandstone
Quartz Sandstone is just sandstone consisting of over 95% of quartz. It is formed through cementation of sand-grains compacted and cemented through calcium carbonate, siliea, or iorn oxides. Sandstone Formed through accumulation of sand and compacted by pressure of overlaying deposits, then cemented through precipitation between sand grains. Granite Formed through the slow cooling of high silicate magma which rises through the Earth's crust. Once it cools, it crystalizes into granite. |
