When and how was Table Mountain formed?
Table Mountain was formed over 250 million years ago around the same time that the
supeontenient Pangaea was forming during the Palaeozoic era, during the Permian Period.
At that time, the mountain was layered by ice sheets that moved across and flattened the
sandstone layers, creating the flat top of the mountain which is the characteristic that
Table Mountain is named after, since it looks like a table. When there are white clouds resting
on top of Table Mountain, the locals say that the mountain has a table cloth.
